CHESTERVILLE AND DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Welcome to our traditional rural village of Chesterville, founded in 1843.

Our rich pioneer heritage is preserved in the Upper Canadian architecture of our churches, our Town Hall (1867) as well as in our numerous Century homes. Immerse yourself in the agricultural heritage of our District, expressed in its farms and in its commercial centres such as Morewood, Winchester, and Finch.

This visual and economic heritage reveals to the resident and visitor alike the history of a once-bustling self-sufficient area of Dundas County.

Chsterville & District Heritage Centre

We are a group of residents of the Chesterville and District area who are interested in helping to preserve and interpret local history. The Chesterville and District Historical Society was founded in 1984 with the help of the Rotary Club of Chesterville. We are affiliated with the Ontario Historical Society and share many of its goals, for example:

  • To research, record, and preserve the physical, social, folkloric agricultural and industrial history.

  • To maintain and promote our Heritage Centre located within the Old Town Hall

  • To accept donations of historical artifacts and documents

  • To develop and promote jointly with other community groups, educational programs for use in schools, in order to enhance knowledge of local history.

Our meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 PM in the Heritage Centre, which is located at 14 Victoria Street in the Village of Chesterville. This building, erected in 1867 and which has served variously as a town hall, a fire hall, a court house, a jail, and a movie theatre, now houses a sizeable collection of artifacts of interest to both amateur and professional historians. As the facility does not have a curator nor any full-time staff, it is classed as a Heritage Centre instead of a Museum, even though many of the displays, especially of a restored district map dating from the mid 19th century, are of museum quality.

Upcoming meetings: September 23, October 21, November 18 and December 16, 2008.  All meetings are held at the Heritage Centre, 14 Victoria Street, Chesterville.  Contact Carolyn Goddard (613-938-2455) for more information.
