Policy No.  002-2003
Effective:   July 14, 2003

POLICY STATEMENT:

The Temporary Tent Permit Policy outlines three categories which address specific requirements depending upon the nature of a proposed tent.

A.        TENTS THAT ARE NOT COVERED UNDER THE ONTARIO BUILDING CODE

Tents that do not require a permit include:

  • any tent or group of tents (less than 10 feet apart) that are less than 650
    square feet
    (60m2), and

  • are at least 10 feet (3m) from other structures

B.        TENTS NOT REQUIRING A BUILDING PERMIT

Tents assembled in the following format will not require a formal review under the Ontario Building Code (OBC), or require further inspections by the department, and thus permits will not be necessary.  The person responsible for the Tent must still conform to subsection 3.13.1 of the OBC and any zoning regulations of the Township:

  • any tent or group of tents that are greater than 650 square feet (60m2) but less than 2430 square feet (225m2), and

  • is not erected closer than 10 feet (3m) to any property line or other structures, and has a clear access for fire fighting from all sides, and

  • does not contain bleachers, and

  • does not contain sidewalls made of fabric or other material, and

  • does not contain sanitary facilities.

C.        TENTS REQUIRING A BUILDING PERMIT

Tents requiring a Building Permit, at a prescribed fee of $75.00, are as follows:

  • any large tent greater than 2430 square feet (225m2), or

  • any tent greater than 650 square feet (60m2) and includes sidewalls made of fabric or other material, or sanitary facilities, or bleachers.

When applying for a permit of this nature, the applicant must provide a fully dimensioned site plan, appropriate engineering for guy wire and post distribution for large tents, certification of fire retardant, internal layout plans, and any other approvals as dependant on the use of the structure.
